Born in Rome and raised in poverty during the second World War to an Italian father and English mother. In 1946 aged 16, Mangano won the “Miss Rome” beauty contest and a year later was working in films. She achieved notable success in Bitter Rice in 1949 and remained a star between the 1950’s and 1970’s and up until her last film Dark Eyes in 1987.
